The Machine Design is a compulsory course and has been offered by the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.

Course structure and modules

CONTENTS:             

Introduction, Basic definitions related to the subject, Classification of Machines, and Machine Design, Machine elements and its classification, Machine designer’s responsibilities, Design Procedure of machine components.

General considerations in machine design: Factor of Safety for ductile and brittle materials, Stress concentration, Corrosion, Concept of Interchangeability, Limits and Fits, Tolerances and Allowances.

Component Design: Introduction to Design of Shaft, Keys, and Coupling, Design of shafts, Keys, and Coupling.

Design of Springs: Design of Helical, Leaf, and Spiral springs.

Design/Selection of Joints:  Screws, Bolts, and Riveted Joints, failure of riveted joints and efficiency of riveted joint. Design of riveted boiler joints.

Pulleys, Belts, and Flywheels: Introduction to pulleys, Belts and Flywheels, design of pulleys, Belts, and flywheel.
